University of Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine Names Brian M. Murray, MD, Interim Chair to Lead Department of Medicine

16 Nov, 2022

I am pleased to share that Brian M. Murray, MD, has been appointed as Interim Chair of the Department of Medicine at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo. He will assume his new duties on January 2, 2023, and continue in his role of associate professor.

Dr. Murray is a disciplined, innovative, and visionary leader who will work to grow the department, expand clinical trials, and build strong relationships with our hospital partners.

A highly respected physician in the fields of Nephrology and Internal Medicine, Dr. Murray began his academic career more than three decades ago with the Jacobs School’s Department of Medicine.

He has also dedicated nearly forty years of service to Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) where he has been the Medical Staff President, Medical Director of Dialysis Services and Interim Director of the Transplant and Renal Center of Excellence. Since 2008 he has served as ECMC’s Chief Medical Officer.

His clinical activities are focused on caring for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and those with end-stage renal disease undergoing renal replacement therapy.

His expertise will be invaluable as we strive to take the medical school to national prominence as a Top 25 public research institution.

Dr. Murray’s research has focused on addressing population health management using bioinformatics to develop methods for early detection of kidney disease. His past research has included study of the neurohormonal control of the renal circulation, the diagnosis and treatment of viral diseases in transplant patients, vascular access problems in hemodialysis patients and the early identification and treatment of CKD.

A native of Dublin, Ireland, Dr. Murray obtained his medical degree from Trinity College, University of Dublin, where he also completed his internship and residency. Additionally, he completed a renal fellowship at the University of Minnesota Hospital. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland.

He has earned recognition with numerous honors and awards, including the Gift of Life Award from the National Kidney Foundation of WNY, ECMC’s Distinguished Physician Award, and Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors in America.

He is very active in the community, serving in roles with Upstate New York Transplant Services (now Connect Life), the End Stage Renal Disease Network of New York State and the Irish Classical Theater, among many others.

I’m excited that Dr. Murray has accepted this critically important role within the Jacobs School. With an impressive track record of research excellence and collaboration, I am confident he is well-positioned to lead the department into the future by growing research and strengthening our relationships with our hospital partners.
