UNC School of Medicine Recruits Kori Flower, MD, MPH as Chief of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine

Kori B. Flower, MD, MPH, has been appointed the next Division Chief for General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine and will assume this role on July 15, 2022. Flower’s appointment follows a national search conducted earlier this year.

Flower completed her undergraduate training at Cornell University, earned a masters degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and then completed medical school at the University of California, San Francisco. She first came to UNC-Chapel Hill in 1998 as a pediatrics resident, and later completed a preventive medicine residency and then a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar research fellowship from 2002 to 2004. After a brief time on faculty, she worked in a community health center for five years before being recruited back to academic medicine.

Flower is currently a Professor of Pediatrics in the department and a nationally known expert in the use of quality improvement methodology to implement screening tools in primary care practice. Her QI work and research generally focuses on understanding and eliminating health inequities particularly for Latino/a/x children and families. Clinically she works in primary care and has a particular focus on the care of children with medical complexity. She currently serves as the Section Chief for Research within the division and as the Associate Director of the Preventive Medicine Residency. She is a co-PI on a multi-institution PCORI award and is the Population Health Co-Director of the federally funded North Carolina Integrated Care for Kids.

Twenty-four physician faculty spanning four different specialties are part of the General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine Division. The division is broadly engaged in all academic missions with over 30,000 annual visits and consults, over $4 million of external programmatic and research funding and broad-based advocacy efforts.
