UAB Medicine in Birmingham, Ala., has named Reid Jones CEO
Reid F. Jones has been named chief executive officer of UAB Medicine. Jones, who has been chief operating officer of the UAB Health System since the position was created in 2013, assumes the duties of CEO of UAB Medicine as Will Ferniany, Ph.D., takes on the roles of CEO of the UAB Health System/Ascension St. Vincent’s alliance, established July 1, and the UAB Health System Authority, formed earlier this year under the University of Alabama Board of Trustees.
Before becoming COO of UAB Medicine, Mr. Jones was executive vice president and senior vice president of ambulatory services of the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation in Birmingham. A Birmingham native and UAB graduate, Jones has served UAB Medicine for more than 25 years. He will retain his role as CEO of UAB Hospital.
“I’m looking forward to transitioning into this new position and tackling the challenges that lie ahead for both UAB Medicine and the health care industry,” Jones said. “UAB Medicine is a tremendous organization with an outstanding faculty and staff. We are a vital part of this community and our state, and I am committed to continuing to serve this organization to the best of my ability.”
Announced in January 2020 and effective July 1, the UAB Health System/Ascension St. Vincent’s alliance will increase access to high-quality, innovative medical services that further enhance patient care and address Alabama’s most pressing health threats.
“I am proud to partner with Reid Jones to lead the UAB Medicine Division of the UAB/St. Vincent’s alliance,” Ferniany said. “Reid Jones has helped steer the Health System through some difficult times and important accomplishments during his long tenure. He understands this organization from top to bottom, and I’m confident that he will continue to provide excellent leadership and strengthen our missions.”
