Raul A. Vasquez, M.D. Joins the University of Kentucky Department of Neurosurgery

The team at Academic Med Physician Recrutiers is pleased to annouce the success placement of Raul A. Vasquez, M.D., who recently joined the University of Kentucky College of Medicine as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery. Dr. Vasquez comes to Kentucky from Vanderbilt University where he was a clinical instructor and spine fellow. While at Vanderbilt, Dr. Vasquez stood out for his dedication to excellent clinical care and research.

Dr. Vasquez completed his undergraduate training at the University of Puerto Rico where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. Following, he received his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, graduating 1st of 121 students. A promising career ahead of him, Dr. Vasquez completed an internship in general surgery at the University of Puerto Rico and a neurosurgery residency at the University of Florida.

Most recently, Dr. Vasquez completed the distinguished complex spine fellowship at Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Vasquez had extensive exposure to research during his education as a Clinical Associate and Research Fellow at the National Institutes of Health. During this time, Dr. Vasquez investigated and published on acoustic schwannomas and neurofibromatosis 2. In 2012, the Univeristy of Florida's Department of Neurosurgery presented him with the Neurosurgery Research Award. In 2015, he was awarded the Sam Hassenbusch Young Neurosurgeon Award by the Congress of Neurological Surgeons for: "The Profile of a Smoker and its Impact on Outcomes after Cervical Spine Surgery."

Academic Med is proud to have placed another young and distinguished physician -- wishing him the best as Dr. Vasquez and his research team continue to focus on translational clinical research in the areas of spine surgery outcomes, spinal cord injury, and spine tumors for the patients of the state of Kentucky.
